WGST 1010 - Banned Books

The Big Red Box

Start with keywords from your topic. It might be as broad as using banned books or book banning. Or it might be narrower, such as banning queer authors. The two example searches below outline getting started with searching in the Big Red Box, and outline narrowing results.

Search Example #1

In the Big Red Box, search: (banned books OR book banning). The results are huge, almost 400,000! Try limiting by Resource Type or Publication Date or Subject. Watch the short video clip below to see this in action. This video contains no narration.

Search Example #2

In the Big Red Box, search: banning queer authors. Sign into your account on the results page so you can save individual titles. The results list is still large, nearly 3,000. You can still limit the results using Resource Type, Publication Date, and Subject. Watch the short video clip below to see this in action. This video contains no narration.

American Conservative

When searching a publications website, use keywords from your topic. Sometimes you might need to use specific keywords. For example, you may need to search for a particular author (e.g., Maya Angelou), or search for a book by its title (e.g., Gender Queer: A Memoir). The example searches below show both broad keywords and a specific book.

Search Example #1

In the search field, enter: banned books. The list is nowhere near as large as a results list for the Big Rex Box. This is expected since we are only searching one publication. With this size list, and since it is sorted by relevance, it's worth scrolling through the list to review individual article titles. Watch the short video clip below to see this in action. This video contains no narration.

Search Example #2

In the search field, enter: Gender Queer. The list is not large, so scrolling through the results and looking for articles related to this book title will work well. Watch the short video clip below to see this in action. This video contains no narration.
